Volunteers' Week 2022

Our Volunteers' Voices

This is a picture of me and my Iranian friend, Shima. She started as a student (my first with HWR). I have been teaching her English for over a year, and now I see her as a dear friend. We share fashion tips, exercise advice, and most importantly: laughter.

I love cheering people up and being cheered up. I am humbled by the individuals I meet and it's a pleasure to be given the opportunity to make a tiny difference.

I always enjoy volunteering at the hotel. Everyone is very welcoming and appreciative of what we do. We have many laughs together and that is good for my partners and for me.

I like connecting people with the information they’re looking for, whether they’re a refugee or a prospective volunteer. Sharing the stories of resettled families is really rewarding.

I move large items from donors' homes to our refugees' places. My role with HWR is a practical one. I like that what I do enables the families we support to live a more comfortable life and it's in contrast to my job which is mainly in front of a screen these days. It a privilege to meet those who receive the items as well as those who generously give to the charity.
I've been a volunteer ESOL teacher for over a decade. It's rewarding when you help people improve their lives. It is especially important to help in this time of need for so many.

I love volunteering with Herts Welcomes Refugees. It is a privilege to meet so many inspiring people like Iman - who you can see here with me at the St Albans Museum café!

I have met so many interesting and varied people. I've learned a lot and laughed a lot

I have met and made friends with so many people, both other volunteers and people coming to join our communities. One thing is, you get a different perspective: you get to see things through someone else's eyes, and it makes you think.
