A Million Acts of Hope

Picture
We are delighted to be taking part in A Million Acts of Hope, a national invitation to celebrate the everyday kindness, care and connection happening across the UK. The Million Acts of Hope Week of Action takes place from 13-20 May.

Herts Welcomes Refugees talked to volunteers at our recent AGM and produced video clips sending messages of hope like this one below. To watch them all, see our playlist on YouTube.
One of the young refugees we interviewed said “For me, as a refugee, the volunteer group has been so helpful and it has been so nice to know more people and have connections with new people.”

Volunteer Soha said "You have to meet people to know what they are going through, so a lot of people speak negatively about asylum seekers and refugees but they don’t really know what efforts they are making to really integrate into our society. If you meet someone then you are going to learn much more about them."

A policewoman working with our volunteer Vicky said “Meeting the refugees, they really do want to integrate, they’re joining in everything, they want to learn the language, the culture.”

Volunteers and refugees also worked together in craft and English classes to create a banner and created hearts containing messages of hope such as “I want to have a stable and healthy life” and “I want my children to be happy.”
Artist Shervin recently sent a beautiful new painting Dawn of Hope which you can see below.

Shervin writes beautifully about the message of this painting:

"Dawn of Hope" reflects the persistence of life within a fractured spatial field. This work does not focus on the rupture itself, but on the defiant grace of what emerges beyond it.

It captures the moment where a sapling utilizes the very remnants of destruction as a scaffold for its growth. In this suspended moment, fragility and endurance coexist, proving that hope is not the absence of scars, but the radical strength to grow through them. It is the quiet yet powerful life that remains, and that rises, thereafter...
